I had wanted a pair of Veja sneakers since the moment I saw a post of their V-10 style in red and blue. Something about the oversized off-white sole contrasting with the sparkling white of the body of the shoe put me under a spell.
It was about a second later I sent the post to my best friend who, as unhelpful as ever, told me to buy them immediately. Unfortunately, with the steep price of $130 (125 Euros), these gorgeous sneakers were just out of reach for my poor high school hands.
Fast forward to the summer before college. I need a new pair of sneakers as the pair of white sneakers I had bought at Payless were falling apart — apparently, that happens when you love a pair of shoes, who knew? Having never forgotten about the beautiful pair of sneakers sitting in a saved folder on Instagram, I cautiously went onto the Veja website and started to dig.
Through my research, I found out that Veja makes its shoes with sustainability in mind. Made in Brazil, the shoes consist of organic cotton and recycled polyester while some of the rubber used in the shoe grows wild in the Amazon.
A few weeks before I left for college, I looked at my bank account, gave myself a pep talk, and bought a pair of white V-10 Veja sneakers with a gray V logo. They were my babies, and they were G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S.
The first time I wore them, I thought, “these are the shoes powerful women wear when they can’t be bothered with heels,” and that’s what they became. Though the leather was initially a little stiff, they broke in beautifully within just a couple days.
Now, back to the present. It’s been over three years, and my babies are on their last leg. My trusty Veja’s have been worn almost every other day since I’ve bought them, which includes a trip to Orlando Studios and Disney World in Florida, where I wore them to both theme parks each day of our tripI would say with how much wear I got out of them, they held up well (or as well as any shoe could), and now I’m ready for another pair.
Will I be re-buying the pair I already own?
Will I finally get my hands on the classic red and navy pair that I initially fell in love with?
Or will I buy a pair entirely out of left field?
You’ll just have to wait and see, I guess. (Imagine me saying that like Ryan Secrest whenever he would cut to a break on American Idol).
